Where the amplifier sits in the system
A source sends film sound to an AV receiver or surround processor. The processor decodes the soundtrack, applies bass management, room correction, delay and level control, then sends a line-level signal for each channel. A separate power amplifier increases that signal enough to drive the loudspeaker.
An AV receiver contains processing and amplification in one chassis. A separates system moves power amplification into one or more dedicated chassis. Separates can offer more channel choice, greater output capability, easier upgrades and less heat around the processor, but they require more rack space, cabling and planning.
What the amplifier must deliver
Loudspeakers need voltage to create level and current when their impedance falls. Cinema soundtracks also contain short peaks far above their average level. The amplifier must reproduce those peaks without clipping, remain stable into the real loudspeaker load and do this across the channels that are active at the same time.
The front left, centre and right channels often carry the greatest continuous demand. Surround and overhead channels may need less average power, but still require clean transient capability. Subwoofers are normally self-powered or use dedicated high-power amplification.
What it does not do
The power amplifier does not decode Dolby Atmos, choose crossover points or correct the room unless it includes separate DSP functions. It cannot compensate for poor loudspeaker placement, inadequate acoustic treatment or an incorrectly configured processor.
Amplifier class, weight and headline wattage are clues about a design—not a ranking of sound quality. Noise, gain, load stability, power supply, protection, cooling and implementation matter more than one marketing number.
A sensible first specification
Start with the loudspeaker sensitivity and impedance, the distance to the main seats, the desired peak level and the number of channels. Then decide how much rack space, cooling and electrical capacity are available. This produces a channel plan: higher-duty amplification for the front stage, suitable multichannel power for surrounds and heights, and a clear allowance for future expansion.

- List every loudspeaker and its role.
- Record sensitivity, nominal/minimum impedance and recommended power.
- Measure the longest listening distance.
- Decide the target playback level and headroom.
- Plan rack space, cooling, mains power and cable routes.
